Method
- Step 1Boil the vegetables and eggs
Boil the beets, potatoes, carrots, and eggs in advance until cooked through. Let them cool.

Remove the bones and skin from the herring and cut it into small pieces.
NoteIf using small herring, use 2 fillets.
Herring - Step 3Grate the ingredients
Grate the cooked vegetables (beets, potatoes, and carrots) and eggs on a coarse grater. Finely chop or grate the onion.

In a 18x27x6 cm dish, layer in the following order: potatoes, onion, herring, carrots, eggs, beets. Spread mayonnaise between each layer. If desired, drizzle the first layer of potatoes with vegetable oil.
NoteAdjust the amount of mayonnaise to your taste.

Refrigerate the salad for at least 3-4 hours, preferably overnight, so the layers soak up the flavors.
